Laser Hair Removal Pre / Post Treatment Care

Pre-treatment Instructions:

  • Avoid deep tanning (tanning beds, tanning creams) 2 weeks before and after the treatment. If you must go in the sun, use a sunscreen SPF 25 or higher.

  • It is not necessary to shave prior to coming in for a treatment, except for men with thick beards; in most cases we will trim the hairs before the treatment.

  • It is recommended that you stop bleaching 7-10 days before your procedure.
  • It is best that you refrain from tweezing or waxing immediately. You should wait 10-14 days after last tweezing or waxing prior to your first appointment.  Shaving or clipping of the hair with a small scissors is fine.

Post-treatment Instructions:

  • Immediately after treatment there should be redness and bumps at the treatment site, which may last two or more hours. It is normal for the treated area to feel like a sunburn for several hours. The redness may continue anywhere between four to forty-eight hours. You may use a cold compress if you desire.

  • Makeup may be used after the treatment, just make sure that you have moisturizer on under your makeup. In fact, moisturizer will help the dead hair exfoliate from the follicle, so use moisturizer frequently and freely on the treated area.  Any moisturizer without alpha-hydroxy will work (alpha-hydroxy can cause local skin irritation if used immediately after a laser treatment).

  • Avoid sun exposure to reduce the chance of dark or light spots.  Use sunscreen SPF 25 or greater at all times throughout the course of treatment.

  • Do not use any hair removal methods or products on the treated area during the course of treatment, as it will prevent you from achieving your best results.  Shaving or clipping the hair is fine but absolutely no tweezing, waxing or depilatories.  Avoid picking or scratching the treated skin.

  • Anywhere from 5-30 days after the treatment, shedding of the hair may occur and this may appear as new hair growth.  This is not new hair growth, but dead hair pushing its way out of the follicle. You can help the hairs exfoliate by taking a hot shower and rubbing the area with a washcloth or loofa sponge.
  • After the underarms are treated, use a powder instead of a deodorant for the first 24 hours to reduce the skin irritation.

  • For best results your first 4 treatments are to be done at 4 to 8 week intervals.
    Ears / Neck = 4 weeks
    Shoulders / Arms / Chest / Back / Abdomen / Bikini = 4-6 weeks
    Legs = 8 weeks
  • Be sure to call ahead for an appointment. This will best affect the new hair growth that has not yet appeared above the top skin layer. You may not have much hair at the treated area, but the complete area requires a repeat treatment for best results.
